Annual Tax Rate Comparison

Get excited! It's my annual reminder on our property tax rates! We have made a lot of progress the last few years to reduce the rate and get more competitive with the cities around us. However, we continue to be the 6th highest rate in Bexar/Guadalupe County. The proposed budget is asking us to go up on that rate even more. I know there are always grumbles about tax rate comparisons and complaints that we don't have enough sales tax. But, the reality is that we have redirected a large portion of our sales tax to non-essential areas. This is another area we are making progress on, but there is room for improvement.

Setting that aside...According to the budget page "I" (pdf page 4), the revenue the increase in rate will bring is only $155,434 ($273,498 total increase less the $118,064 coming from new properties). In a general fund budget of $20 million (not to mention a utility fund budget of over $11 million), there are a myriad of ways to find savings of at least $155k so that we can avoid increasing property taxes. It's just not a lot of money to the City, but goes a long way symbolically to the people.

Before you decide to vote for significant golf course improvements, please consider the message it sends to the taxpayer. Let's take care of our taxpayers first.
